Softcover. Zustand: new. Octavia E. Butler's final novel is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly unhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted-and still wants-to destroy her and those she cares for, and how she can save herself."A master storyteller, Butler casts an unflinching eye on racism, sexism, poverty, and ignorance and lets the reader see the terror and beauty of human nature." -The Washington Post.

Butler used the conventions of science fiction to explore the dangerous legacy of racism in America in harrowingly personal terms. She broke new ground with books that featured complex Black female protagonists I wrote myself in, she would later recall -establishing herself as one of thepioneers of the Afrofuturist aesthetic. In 1995 she became the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, in recognition of her achievement in creating new aspirations for the genre and for American literature. ---This 1st volume in the Library of America edition of Butler's collected works opens with her masterpiece, Kindred, one of the landmark American novels of the last half century. Its heroine, Dana, a Black woman, is pulled back and forth between the present and the pre-Civil War past, where she ?nds herself enslaved on the plantation of a white ancestor whose life she must save to preserve her own. In Fledgling, an amnesiac discovers that she is a vampire, with a difference: she is a new, experimental birth with brown skin, giving her the fearful ability to go out in sunlight. Rounding out the volume are eight short stories and five essays -including two never before collected, plus a newly researched chronology of Butler's life and career and helpful explanatory notes prepared by scholar Gerry Canavan. Butler's friend, the writer and editor Nisi Shawl, provides an introduction. Octavo, pictorial wrappers. Advance reading copy of the first edition. The last novel published during Butler's lifetime, the story of Shori, an apparently young amnesiac girl who is in fact the first of her kind, a 53-year-old genetically modified black vampire whose melanin allows her to walk in the light of day. A novel that explores the limits of "otherness" and what it means to be truly human. A fine copy. (#168334).

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Jennifer, Best wishes, Octavia E. Butler". This was Butler's last lifetime publication, and her papers at the Huntington Library include multiple drafts for potential sequels. This title is uncommon signed. Butler, the first Black woman to receive both the Nebula and Hugo Awards, and the first science fiction author to be granted a MacArthur fellowship, "creates powerful images of black women in a genre in which and from which they have traditionally been marginalized and excluded" (Boutler, p. 170). In this, a vampire science fiction novel, Butler transforms the traditionally white and paternalistic vampire myth into an interrogation of race, sexuality, and intimacy. Author Junot Díaz chose it as his 2005 Book of the Year in The Guardian, praising it as a "harrowing meditation on dominance, sex, addiction, miscegenation, and race that completely devours the genre which gave rise to it". The recipient was evidently an avid reader of Butler, with annotations comparing this title to other works by her, and a gloss on the half-title: "Oxford dictionary - Fledgling - noun - a bird just fledged - or - (Fledged) - having large enough wing feathers to fly". Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in silver, dark red endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine ends bumped, slight wear to corners, head of rear joint, and foot of front joint, covers rubbed, front cover darkened where previously three stickers were adhered (a star, flower, and circle), marks to fore and lower edges, occasional underlinings in both pen and pencil to the text with a few annotations, pp. 158-169 partially highlighted in green. A good copy in a very good jacket indeed, lightly soiled with a little creasing to edges and trivial damp stains to foot of rear panel, else sharp and unclipped.

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the half title, "To Yvette, best wishes, Octavia E. Butler, 10-26-05". Though unmarked as such, the recipient was Yvette Le Roy, the founder of Liberty House in Harlem. Alongside promoting books by Black authors, her store sold handcrafts produced by the Mississippi Poor People's Corporation and hosted poetry readings by Gwendolyn Brooks and Nikki Giovanni. Fledgling was Butler's last lifetime publication, and her papers at the Huntington Library include multiple drafts for potential sequels. This copy has four flyers for the Langston Hughes Festival's "Tribute to Octavia Butler", 11 November 2005, which are loosely inserted. Foot of spine just bumped, trivial spots to top edge; unclipped jacket slightly creased at foot: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
