Einst war er ja ein idealistischer Anwalt, doch seit dem Eintritt in die Kanzlei des Vaters ist es damit vorbei. Vom Vater hat Nathan nicht nur die Kultiviertheit, das gute Aussehen und die Korruptheit geerbt, sondern auch den hohen Verbrauch an Frauen, bevorzugt Hispanas. Isabel, Nathans Sekretärin, wird ermordet aus dem Wasser gefischt. Am Vorabend war er noch mit ihr unterwegs gewesen-- und Errol Santow, ihr Bruder, der Polizist und Kindheitsfreund Nathans, ist überzeugt, dass dieser der Mörder ist. In jungen Jahren waren sie unzertrennlich, Nathan, Errol, und Claire, Nathans Verlobte, die er fortwährend betrogen hatte - bis María auftauchte und sie ablöste. María stirbt, auf eigenen Wunsch heimlich und versteckt, qualvoll an AIDS -- die Krankheit, an der wohl auch Nathan über kurz oder lang sterben wird. Immer schneller dreht sich das Rad, immer enger wird die Schlinge -- bis Nathan plötzlich selbst als Angeklagter vor dem Richter steht und langsam die Zusammenhänge begreift. Die große Rolle, die Drogen in diesem Buch spielen, merkt man auch an der Erzählweise. Immer wieder kurze, unzusammenhängende, grell beleuchtete Szenen, rasche Wechsel, eine Sprache wie im Fieberwahn -- und dann wieder ruhigere Passagen, in denen dann etwas Klarheit auftaucht. Nach den ersten 50 Seiten war ich erst einmal nur genervt; ich konnte mit all den Andeutungen, Anfängen, Abbrüchen, Szenenwechseln und den vielen Namen nichts anfangen. Doch danach wurde es deutlich besser, langsam wurden ein paar Zusammenhänge klar, wichtige Szenen aus der Vergangenheit erzählt. Trotzdem -- ich fühlte mich an ein rasend schnell geschnittenes Musikvideo erinnert. Alles in allem hat mir aber die Geschichte, die eigentlich erzählt wird, ziemlich gut gefallen -- und sie ist es auch, die den durchwegs guten Nachgeschmack rechtfertigt, den dieser Krimi bei mir hinterlassen hat. --Daniela Ecker.
