The public was most interested in Miss Dickinson's philosophy of life, her aptitude for buoyancy, her views on what and how to value the experiences and sensations and temptations of life. The second group contained here are occassional poems on birthdays, celebrations, observances. Together, due to the patience of her biographer in working through the codes--which are presented here in facsimile-the world gets the picture though a whole generation of poem lovers did not see this final presentation.

Although Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly eighteen hundred poems were published during her lifetime. The work that was published during her lifetime was usually altered significantly by the publishers to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time. Although most of her acquaintances were probably aware of Dickinson's writing, it was not until after her death in 1886-when Lavinia, Emily's younger sister, discovered her cache of poems-that the breadth of Dickinson's work became apparent. Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 May 15, 1886) was an American poet. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Binding nice and tight and attractive. Endpapers cracked at the gutters both front and back, revealing a sliver of backing linen. Early ownership name signed in ink on front endpaper. Title page dated 1892. Copyright page dated 1891. No mention of any additional printings. 230 pages. 4 page facsimile poem at the front, without any tissue guard. Everything, including facsimile, printed in laid paper, not the glossier paper of the first printing. Nice and clean throughout, with no foxing or stains. According to the Myerson bibliography, the first printing of this series was 960 copies printed in October of 1891. The second printing (1,000 copies) came out in November 1891 with the date 1892 on the title page and several textual changes, which are all present in this copy. A third printing of 1,000 copies was printed in December and a fourth printing of another 1,000 immediately after, and a fifth printing of 500 copies just before the New Year. Myerson does not give any indication how we might tell the difference between the printings of November and December of 1891; there were no additional textual changes by which to tell them apart. Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. Bound with light green cloth spine, ivory cloth over boards, with gold lettering and decorations on the cover and spine. A nice , clean, attractive binding. Minor fading to crown and foot of spine, equally minor fading to the ivory or cream colored cloth over boards. All three edges gilt. Gold lettering on the spine and front cover and gold stamp of the Indian Pipes found on the earliest Dickinson editions. Title page dated 1906. Copyright page dated 1896, and statement 'Second Edition' below. 200 pages. Binding tight, pages square. There are some blooms of foxing here and there, throughout. On the front endpaper, there is a 1909 Christmas inscription. Also at the front, endpapers are cracked at the gutter, not affecting strength of binding, but revealing the backing linen beneath. Some bibliographic information from Myerson: The Third Series was published in edition of 1,000 copies in April 1896. A second printing of 1,000 came off the presses in September of that same year. They were not all bound at the same time, and while they were waiting for binding, the publishing firm of Roberts Brothers was purchased by Little, Brown, and Company (1898) so some of them have Roberts Brothers in gold at the base of the spine and some have Little, Brown, and Company. In 1906, a third printing came out, but it still says Second Printing on the copyright page. Myerson says that this third printing is bound in gray cloth with blank covers -- but this copy has the yellow-green/white color scheme used in the first two editions. Perhaps there were some bindings left over from the 2nd printing when this came to the binder. Myerson does not say how many copies of the third printing there were. A fourth printing came out in 1911, so whatever the size of the 3rd printing, it took 5 years to sell out. Based on the binding, we would assume that this might be a very early copy of the third printing. but the 1909 Christmas inscription tells a different story, hinting that this copy wasn't released into the wild until that holiday season 3 years after the pages were printed. As with all early Dickinson titles, this is quite a scarce volume. Please email with questions or to request photos. First edition of Emily Dickinson's second book of poetry. BAL 4656. Octavo, original publisher's gray and green cloth decoratively stamped in gilt, all edges gilt, facsimile manuscript leaves at front, tissue guarded title page. In very good condition. A nice example. A poet who took definition as her province, Emily Dickinson challenged the existing definitions of poetry and the poetâs work. Like writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman, she experimented with expression in order to free it from conventional restraints. After discovering hundreds of Emilyâs poems shortly after her death, the poetâs sister Lavinia resolved that the poetry must be published. She later wrote: "I have had a âJoan of Arcâ feeling about Emilies [sic] poems from the first" (Letter to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, December 23, 1890, as quoted in Bingham, p. 87). Lavinia approached two of the poetâs friends--sister-in-law Susan Dickinson and mentor Thomas Wentworth Higginson --for help. Susan did not pursue publication quickly enough for Lavinia, and Higginson was otherwise occupied. To fulfill her vision, Lavinia turned to Mabel Loomis Todd, the vivacious young wife of an Amherst College professor. Todd was a momentous choice, for she was deeply involved in a love affair with Austin Dickinson, Susanâs husband and Emily's brother. An accomplished artist and musician, Todd brought much-needed vitality and commitment to preparing Dickinsonâs poetry for publication. After finally enlisting Thomas Wentworth Higginson as co-editor, Todd completed Poems of Emily Dickinson in 1890, just four years after the poetâs death.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Bound in olive green cloth with beveled edged, gold lettering on the cover and spine. This copy is nice and clean and tight. Very minor fading to fringe at crown and foot of spine and board-corners less than razor sharp, but very good by any standard. Indian Pipes on the front cover. Lettering on the spine is virtually unreadable, even though spine is not faded significantly darker than the boards. Title page dated 1891. Frontispiece tissue and 4 page facsimile of poem in Dickinson's hand. Top edge gilt. 230 pages. Copyright page dated 1891 and no statement of any other editions. Page edges square. Some minor blooms of foxing here and there throughout, but overall very nice. According to Myerson's bibliography, there were 960 copies printed on October 21, 1891. It was issued in three different bindings; this one is Binding B (although no priority is given) in 'medium olive cloth'. The first printing sold very well and the second printing (1,000 copies) came out less than a month after the first. Several textual changes make it very easy to differentiate from the first, including changing the date on the title page to 1892, even though it was still 1891 when it was printed. It continued to sell extremely well and was printed three more times before the end of 1891 (with the date 1892 on all those title pages). This is a lovely copy.
