Usually authors find it very hard to explain religious stories and events in simple yet thought provoking manner no matter how many books that author has written. This book is NOT one of those. There is a consistent approach to explanation that makes it for the mind very easy to soak message and believe in what that author has written. This is a phenomenal book, at least for me, who has been searching to get a lot of answers regarding Hinduism and the meaning of certain Vishnu-viate events. Indeed a pure pleasure to read. This books lays of very through difference between Shiva and Vishnu and there their purpose and activity, which in no other books I've read so far has been mentioned properly. The author has made a very honest attempt to not confuse the reader or dilute any argument that he put forward plus also highlights the anomalies that exits between Mahabharata and Ramayana (though not that much in depth, it does compel reader to self explore such anomalies). He has succeeded in his effort at almost every level. The book in the end talks about Kalki - last avatar of Vhinu - and describes the events following the end of the world - like rising seas levels, massive volcanic explosions etc - indeed given the current global warming scenario and other tectonic activities the happening seems possible. --Ishan Apr 3, 2012

For all those who find mythological stories appealing, this great piece by Dr Pattanaik will be a feast for the mind. The writer has very finely ellaborated the different avataars of the cosmic administrator Mahavishnu in the simplest and easiest writing style. From Mohini the enticer to Mohan the preacher of the great Bhagwat Geeta, Vishnu has shown the world the Pravarrtti Marga as opposite to Shiva's Niwrratti Marga. Living in the material world with the goal of achieving salvation that is attaining spiritual accomplishments is the gist of all Vishnu stories. Why Laxmi the godess of wealth often refferred as Chanchala and asthira never leaves Vishnu's side, why Ravana despite being a scholar runs into heinious deeds, why the creator Brahma is never worshipped, this wonderful books have answers to all such curious notes. --Geetha Sunil Pillai Dec 16, 2011
Reseña del editor:
Draped in yellow silk, garlanded with forest flowers, bedecked with dolphin shaped earrings, anointed with sandal paste, He reclines on a thousand hooded serpent that floats on the ocean of milk, and rides a golden hawk bearing in His arms a conch shell, a wheel, a mace, and a lotus.7 Secrets Of Vishnu explores the beliefs, legends and symbolism related to the Hindu God Vishnu. The author is proficient in writing about Hindu mythology and beliefs. In this book, 7 Secrets Of Vishnu, he goes into Vaishnavite philosophy and stories of Vishnu. Vishnu is the Preserver of the Hindu Trinity, Brahma is the Creator, and Shiva is the Destroyer. Being the Preserver, Vishnu is the God who comes to the aid of Devas, humans and even animals when they are in desperate situations. It is Vishnu who takes numerous avatars or incarnations and descends into the world of humans and restores order. The most famous among his incarnations are celebrated as the Dasavatar or the Ten Avatars. Among these are Rama and Krishna. This book explores these avatars and other stories. The author presents Vishnu as the God who shows the importance of the material world and the need for material growth in order to fully attain spiritual wisdom. The book also draws a parallel between the progression of his avatar in different forms, and evolution. The first avatar was Matsya, a fish. Next he is an amphibian, Kurma, the Tortoise. Then comes the Boar, Varaha, followed by a combination of human and beast, Narasimha. This is followed by the dwarf, Vamana, and the fierce Parasurama. After this comes Rama, a wise and cultured man. As Krishna, he showed that it is possible to indulge in the game of life and yet be a wise person who emphasizes the thoughts behind one s actions. As the yet to come Kalki, he demonstrates the need to let go of status quo in order to bring in a change for the better. Besides these, 7 Secrets Of Vishnu also explores the story of Lakshmi and her sister, Alakshmi, and that of Saraswati. It looks at Narada, the sage who is known as a troublemaker, and the reason behind this. It explains why people don t worship Brahma the Creator. It also explores the philosophical significance of the various stories and the importance and meanings of rituals and symbols used in the worship of Vishnu.
