Deep in the African bush, the young animals are all practising hard: the baby stork is trying to fly, the baby chameleon to change colour and the baby fruit bat to hang from a branch. But Shukudu the baby rhino can't practise being a rhinoceros, because he has no horns. "Horns take time to grow. Be patient," says his mother. How Shukudu learns patience, and gains both a splendid pair of horns, and the friendship of his fellow creatures, is told with warmth and humour.

Jenny Stow gained a BA in English and History of Art from Manchester, before going on to study at Chelsea School of Art. Between 1982 and 1985 she spent four years teaching in Africa, followed by a year in the Caribbean in 1987. Jenny is married with one son.
