Almost from the date of his birth in Galway in 1856, Frank Harris was surrounded by myth and exaggeration, very often perpetrated by himself, but also embroidered by detractors and fanatical supporters. He suffered from a withdrawn, puritanical, insensitive father and his sexual adventures were partly an effort to get the love and the praise that he lacked. He could not live without the reassurance and excitement of constant affairs, and it is as a sexual athlete and liar that posterity has classed him. Philippa Pullar was born in London in 1935. She received a Cordon Bleu Certificate of Cookery and was a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society.
